Welcome

A Biodiversity Hotspot on Your Doorstep

Lochaber is one of the most biodiverse regions in Britain. The convergence of mountain, moorland, ancient woodland, freshwater lochs, and Atlantic coastline creates a remarkable range of habitats within a small area and Highwinds Lodge sits right at the centre of it all, at the foot of Ben Nevis near Torlundy.

From the lodge itself, guests regularly spot red deer grazing in the surrounding fields, golden eagles soaring over the Great Glen, red squirrels visiting the garden, and Highland cattle ambling along the road. At dusk, pine martens emerge from the treeline. Buzzards are an almost daily sight overhead.

Beyond the grounds, the wider Lochaber region supports an extraordinary range of wildlife from orca and minke whales in the coastal waters to white-tailed eagles over Loch Linnhe, otters along the Caledonian Canal, and mountain hare on the high tops. We've documented over 39 species across three detailed wildlife guides to help you make the most of your stay.

Wildlife Watching FAQs

Everything you need to know about wildlife watching from Highwinds Lodge.

What's the best time of year to see wildlife near Fort William?
Wildlife is present year-round, but each season brings different highlights. Spring (March–May) is best for nesting birds, otters with cubs, and returning ospreys. Summer (June–August) brings minke whales, basking sharks, dolphins, and puffins to the coast. Autumn (September–November) is red deer rutting season spectacular to witness. Winter (December–February) offers mountain hare in white pelage, ptarmigan, and golden eagle hunting in the glens.
What wildlife can I see from Highwinds Lodge itself?
Without leaving the grounds, guests regularly spot horses, sheep, cows and deer in the surrounding fields, golden eagles and buzzards overhead, red squirrels, and Highland cattle on the track to the River Lochy.
Are there guided wildlife tours nearby?
Yes. Several operators run guided wildlife experiences from Fort William. WiSe-accredited boat trips from Fort William marina offer marine wildlife cruises to see seals, dolphins, and whales. Land-based guides offer eagle-watching and deer-stalking observation trips.
Do I need binoculars for wildlife watching?
Binoculars make a huge difference, especially for eagles, marine mammals, and mountain species. We recommend at least 8x42 binoculars for general use. A spotting scope is ideal for sea-watching from Corpach or Caol.
Is it safe to approach wildlife?
Always keep a respectful distance. Use binoculars or a telephoto lens rather than approaching. Red deer stags can be aggressive during the autumn rut (September–October). Seals should never be approached on haul-out sites stay at least 50 metres away. Nesting birds should not be disturbed. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code provides detailed guidance on responsible wildlife watching.
What about wildlife photography — any tips?
The Scottish Highlands offer incredible wildlife photography opportunities. Dawn and dusk produce the best light and animal activity. A 300mm+ telephoto lens is essential for most subjects. For marine life, shoot from elevated positions overlooking lochs and the Sound of Mull. Glen Nevis and the Caledonian Canal are reliable spots for otters, red squirrels, and raptors.
Are there any dangerous wild animals to worry about?
Scotland has very few dangerous animals. Adders (the only venomous snake) are shy and rarely seen they'll avoid you if given the chance. Red deer stags should be given space during the rut. Midges (tiny biting flies) are the biggest nuisance from June to September bring repellent. There are no bears, wolves, or large predators in Scotland.
Is Highwinds Lodge suitable for families interested in wildlife?
Absolutely. Children love spotting the horses, sheep and cows from the lodge windows and watching for eagles or buzzards overhead. The marine wildlife boat trips are family-friendly, and rockpool exploring at nearby beaches is brilliant for younger children. Our wildlife guides include family-friendly viewing tips for each species.
