The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup has been held at Nevis Range since 2002, and the town hosted the 2007 World Championships. Whether you ride downhill, cross-country, enduro, or just enjoy trail centres this is the place to be.

Highwinds Lodge sits at the foot of Ben Nevis in Torlundy, just 10 minutes' drive from the Nevis Range car park. That makes us one of the closest accommodation options to the UK's premier mountain bike park. After a full day on the trails, you're back at the lodge in minutes not stuck in the traffic back to town.

Beyond Nevis Range, the wider Highlands offer a lifetime of riding. Laggan Wolftrax and Learnie Red Rocks are under an hour away, and the Great Glen Way offers long-distance route riding. With five bedrooms sleeping ten, we're perfectly set up for groups who want to make a proper trip of it.

Fort William isn't just about trail centres it's a base for epic multi-day riding adventures. The Great Glen Way stretches 79 miles from Fort William to Inverness along the Caledonian Canal, and large sections are perfect for mountain bikes. You can ride it in stages, returning to Highwinds each evening.

Closer to home, the forests and hills around Leanachan, Torlundy, and the Great Glen offer endless unmarked trails and forest roads for exploration. Link up Nevis Range with local loops for full-day epics without ever touching tarmac.

For road cyclists and gravel riders, the Road to the Isles (A830) to Mallaig is one of Scotland's most scenic routes, and the quiet single-track roads of Ardgour and Ardnamurchan offer stunning riding with virtually no traffic.

Is Fort William good for beginner mountain bikers?
Absolutely. While Fort William is famous for its world-class downhill tracks, Nevis Range also has a great selection of blue and green trails that are perfect for beginners and intermediate riders. Laggan Wolftrax, 45 minutes away, is another excellent option with well-graded trails for all abilities.
Where can I store my bikes at Highwinds Lodge?
We have secure, covered bike storage on-site. Your bikes will be safely locked away overnight and between rides. There's space for multiple bikes, so groups are well catered for.
Is there somewhere to wash and dry bikes and gear?
Yes. We have an outdoor hose-down area for bikes and a dedicated boot room with space to dry gear, shoes, and clothing. Underfloor heating in the hallway helps dry everything quickly.
How many people can Highwinds Lodge sleep?
The lodge sleeps up to 10 across five bedrooms — perfect for mountain biking groups. There's a fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, and a spacious living area for post-ride relaxation.
How far is Nevis Range from the lodge?
Nevis Range is just 10 minutes by car from Highwinds Lodge. It's the closest accommodation you'll find to the UK's premier mountain bike park — you can be on the trails in minutes.
Is there a bike shuttle or uplift at Nevis Range?
Yes. The Nevis Range gondola operates as a bike uplift during the summer season, taking you and your bike to the top of Aonach Mor. From there you can ride the famous downhill tracks back to the base. Check the Nevis Range website for current uplift schedules and prices.
Can we mix mountain biking with other activities?
Fort William is an outdoor adventure hub. Between rides you can hike Ben Nevis, kayak on Loch Linnhe, explore Glencoe, visit beaches on the Road to the Isles, or simply recover in one of the town's many excellent pubs and restaurants.
