16 Easy & Low-Level Walks Near Fort William

Explore a well-maintained, level path alongside the Caledonian Canal, nestled within the stunning Great Glen. Enjoy picturesque views of Ben Nevis as the canal winds its way through the landscape. The bordering trees offer pleasant shelter from the wind. Starting at Banavie provides immediate access to the impressive Neptune's Staircase.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct, internationally renowned thanks to the Harry Potter films, features some steep but manageable sections. Various paths around the viaduct offer diverse viewpoints. After experiencing it, a short walk to Loch Shiel is highly recommended to see the Jacobite memorial and the stunning loch. For a bit more adventure: to reach the vantage point in the classic photo, walk through the viaduct and keep going on the track until you see an obvious trail where people have been up the little hill (Tom Dubh on the OS map). There's another great viewpoint if you cross the river under the viaduct itself then head up the track and hill there.

Discover the incredible Camusdarach Beach, boasting crystal-clear turquoise waters and silver sands. Explore various routes between the beaches. This is pure Highland paradise, famously featured in the 80s film 'Local Hero' and offering stunning views of the Isle of Skye, Eigg, and Rum.

The walk to Steall Falls in Glen Nevis offers a stunning experience, leading to the second-highest waterfall in Scotland. Near the waterfall, a steel rope bridge provides an optional crossing for those comfortable with this type of obstacle, offering closer views of the falls.

This is an accessible walk along a well-maintained forestry track on the shores of Loch Arkaig. The route incorporates significant local history and features an Art Treasure Hunt, making it suitable for families. The drive passes through 'The Dark Mile,' a notable former Commando training route.

The Glencoe Lochan Trail offers three distinct trails centered around a lochan. One trail is a wide, level path suitable for wheelchair users. Two additional marked trails offer a slightly more challenging experience with some inclines. The Clachaig Inn pub is conveniently located nearby.

This is an accessible and pleasant walk along well-maintained paths beside the River Nevis. The section on the Ben Nevis side of the river offers particularly scenic views down Glen Nevis. The Ben Nevis Inn is located nearby, offering excellent food and views.

The Nevis Range Gondola offers an accessible way to ascend to 650 meters, providing panoramic views without a strenuous climb. Well-maintained paths are available at the upper station. Gondolas can accommodate wheelchairs up to 60cm wide.

Walk a well-maintained path up about a 300m ascent to reach the grassy embankment outlines of the iron-age fort, Dun Deardail, and see a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. If you're up to tackle Ben Nevis, this is the perfect warm-up walk the day before.

One of our favourite walks in the area. A clear marked path pretty much the whole way, the first part takes you straight up to view the cascading falls. Follow the route round and the views from the forestry track get even better. If you're lucky you could see some Red Squirrels.

A forest walk with a fairly steep climb that offers ever-changing views of the surrounding mountain range. Follow the Walkhighlands route to climb a steep but easy-to-navigate rocky path alongside the flowing water before looping round and heading back down.

A stunning walk starting at the famous Three Sisters car park and must-visit viewpoint in Glencoe. The walk is very rough in places with some light scrambling. In icy conditions it can feel a bit exposed with the gorge on the left take your time and enjoy the drama of it.

A stunning coastal walk starting at the very impressive Castle Tioram. The path is fairly rough and mildly exposed in places so great care is needed in icy conditions, but on a nice day it is a very pleasant walk. After about two miles of coastal path you'll ascend a hill and come across ruins of a hamlet. The going can be quite boggy at this point but the views more than make up for it.

A walk to the base of the magnificent Ben Nevis North Face. See if you can spot any climbers going up some of the legendary North Face routes. This does not ascend Ben Nevis it takes you to the CIC Hut beneath the cliffs. Can be walked directly from the house. In winter it can get quite icy and snowy near the hut; the route is there and back again so you can just turn around whenever it gets uncomfortable.

A lovely walk to a secluded beach with superb coastal views. The route follows a good track before dropping down to the remote bothy and beach at Peanmeanach. One of those special places where you feel properly away from it all.

A nice well-marked trail starting from Kinlochleven. An impressive waterfall and great views down Loch Leven. If you're feeling energetic, combine the walk with a trip to the Ice Factor which contains Britain's tallest indoor ice climbing wall, top rope, lead climbing and bouldering — plus a café.
