the highlands at their best

Things to do on Scotland Winter Holidays

The Highlands in winter is an incredible experience. The ‘winter season’ generally runs from late December to April but the conditions can be very changeable, so make sure you are coming up with an open mind and can be  flexible with your plans.  No matter what  the weather conditions are, there are some great experiences to be had. Here are some of the best options for thigns to do on your Scotland winter holidays!

Nevis Range

The Nevis Range is just a five-minute drive from Highwinds Lodge.  There are a variety of runs including gentle slopes for beginners by the top of the Gonolda station, and more advanced off-piste runs for expert skiers.  Whatever your level you will find there is the slope to suit you. The range has a Ski and Snowboard school and equipment is available to hire. If you’re bringing your own gear send us a message so we can help to provide safe storage. During the summer the Nevis Range turns into a Mountain Biking Mecca

Glencoe Mountain Resort

Another winter sport option in Glencoe. The Glencoe Mountain Resort has 20 runs and eight lifts. Complete beginners can enjoy the gentle plateau runs which make it  a perfect resort for those  starting out.  Experts can experience some of the longest and steepest runs in Scotland. The Glencoe Mountain Resort website also has a handy webcam so you can check in on the snow conditions before your trip!

Winter Walking

The Munros in Scottish Winter conditions are one of my favourite places to be. All the walks suitable for walking in the snow are listed in the hiking section. Just remember that it will take longer in the snowy conditions, so aim to set out in the dark and be prepared to return in the dark. You will need an ice axe, crampons, and a head-torch with you.

Ice Climbing

Highwinds Lodge is right at the base of the Legendary Ben Nevis North Face. On the North Face there are a number of incredible ice climbs. For more information on the routes on Ben Nevis have a look at this guide. There are also some incredible ice climbing opportunities in Glencoe You should only attempt ice climbing or anything anywhere near a gully if you are absolutely certain you know what you’re doing.

Stargazing

Scotland offers some truly fantastic night skies. Glen Nevis, just down the road, is rated as ‘Milky Way Class’, which means the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. If you get really lucky you may see the Northern Lights too!

Photography

The Highlands in the winter look absolutely incredible so why not come up and capture it on camera. Turn the shorter days into an advantage by waking up at a reasonable time and still being able to get to an incredible spot before sunrise!
